Chef Rick Stein to cook up a treat as he celebrates 50 years in the kitchen

Celebrity cook to celebrate his life and career with a visit to Reading’s Hexagon theatre

Celebrity chef Rick Stein is preparing to visit Reading on Monday, March 10, as part of a celebration of his 50th year in the business.

He is currently on an 11-date tour of the country, stopping off in places such as Brighton, Bournemouth, Cardiff and Kendal … but he was determined to ensure that The Hexagon was one of the places where he would visit.

The evening is a chance for audiences to hear stories from Rick Stein’s career, which he says has been centred around his honest, open approach to cookery, trends and everything else he holds dearly.

He promises that the atmosphere in each venue is going to be enjoyably lively as like-minded food fans come together for a warm evening of food and drink.

Who is Rick Stein?

Rick Stein is a multi-award-winning chef, restaurateur, writer and presenter.

In his new show, he delves into his lifelong love affair with cooking and his unwavering devotion to the brilliance of great British produce.

From humble beginnings to the pinnacle of culinary success, Rick’s story is one of perseverance and passion.

Audiences will be able to discover how this self-taught chef, with no prior experience, went on to establish a thriving restaurant business that’s become a national institution.

Revelations from the kitchen, musical delights, poetic interludes, and stories of global adventures are all on the menu, so secure your seats for an evening of entertainment with a culinary icon like no other.

It all started in 1975, when Rick Stein opened The Seafood Restaurant with Jill Stein in Padstow.

He said at the time “nothing is more exhilarating than fresh fish simply cooked” – an ethos he has both lived and run his restaurants by.

The Stein group now runs 10 restaurants, and they also have hotel rooms, a cookery school, self-catering accommodation, four shops and an online fishmonger.

Rick was honoured at the 2024 Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink awards – receiving the Fortnum’s Special Award for the impact his life’s work has had on food and the hospitality industry in this country and beyond.

What was his recent television series?

One of his most recent television programmes was Rick Stein’s Food Stories.

He travelled the country to find some of the best food that we produce.

The visits included Cumbria, Northern Ireland, Kent, Birmingham and Bristol, and saw him return to his Padstow kitchen to cook some recipes that he felt audiences would enjoy.

He said: “Behind every dish there’s a story, big or small.  From fish & chips to pad Thai noodles, from chicken tikka masala to square sausages in a bun for breakfast on the streets of Glasgow.

“The series is about my travels around Britain and Northern Ireland trying to get a handle on what is British cuisine today.

“Some of the nation’s favourite dishes are not traditional to these islands, the series is an attempt to show how exciting and varied what we like to eat in this country is today.”

The series can be enjoyed on the BBC iPlayer, along with other series he has appeared in including Rick Stein’s India and Rick Stein’s Taste of the Sea: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m001w96b/rick-steins-food-stories
