The House Of Doner is to bring a taste of Germany to Reading as it prepares to open its third UK branch.
The company launched in Farringdon last December, and opened a second store in Brixton not long after. It is also planning to open branches in Putney and Clapham.
Now, like other restaurants looking to expand beyond London, Reading is in its sights.
The company has more than 100 branches across Europe and the Middle East and is now starting to explore the UK. It follows in the footsteps of Wendy’s, Jollibee’s, and Popeyes in making Reading one of their first stops in the country.
Signs have gone up on the former Chipstar store next to The Alehouse in Broad Street, which opened in December 2021, and closed in the summer of the following year. The building has been empty ever since. Close to the town centre entrance to The Oracle and also near to Coffee Corner, it is in an ideal location for people wanting to enjoy a kebab.

The House of Donor’s website states that they use top-quality ingredients, with meat imported directly from Berlin, so it is authentically German.
The kebab meat is garnished with its unique range of sauces which the firm says have been carefully crafted to achieve a balance of flavours.
Fuse with crisp vegetables and freshly baked bread, and pair with falafel and you have a meal to remember.
The House of Donor says its promise to customers is: “Authenticity, freshness and flavour”.
What is on the menu at The House of Doner?
The menu for The House of Doner is fairly straightforward: choose a donor, choose the style and vegetables, chose the sauces, and decide whether you want some falafel or not.
Doners or felafels can be served as a sandwich, in a wrap, or in a box, with prices between £6.50 and £8.99, depending on what is ordered. Larger options are available and the meat choices are chicken, mixed and veal. Feta cheese is an add-on option.
Salad choices include iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, onion, tomato, cucumber, and sweetcorn.
The sauces include Garlic, Herb, Hot, Ketchup, Mayo, Samurai, and Joppie.
Joppie is a Dutch condiment based on mayonnaise and mild curry, while Samurai is a mayonnaise with tomatoes and red chilli peppers, making it a spicier choice.
Other menu options include a Rice Bowl, fries, and haloumi pieces.
Each meal at The House of Doner can be customised and there are meal deals for two.
The company offers delivery through Deliveroo and Just Eat.
It also runs its own rewards scheme where people earn points, effectively making one doner or falafel free for every 10 purchased. There are some caveats and full details are available on the House of Doner website: https://www.thehouseofdoner.uk/rewards-program

No opening date has yet been set for The House of Doner’s new Reading branch.
It is not the only German kebab store in Reading town centre. A branch of the German Doner Kebab chain is in Friar Street, close to The Hope Tap pub and opposite Sainsbury’s.
And there are several independent retailers that sell their own unique kebabs including the Central Kebabs shack in St Mary’s Butts, Kings Grill on Kings Road, and Zorba’s in Station Road.
The latter, on the corner of the Harris Arcade, stays open until 4am and is a Reading institution. Its menu includes burgers, chips, hot dogs and kebabs.
