Voodoo Room gig to celebrate amazing sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Cream

Gig at South Street Arts Centre on Friday, May 10

Voodoo Room is a celebration of the best music from Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Cream, and it is coming to Reading’s South Street Arts Centre this weekend.

The musicians need little introduction, having been responsible for a string of hits that have resonated across the ages.

For Jimi Hendrix, they include Purple Haze, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary and Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

As a solo artist, Eric Clapton had hits with Tears In Heaven, Wonderful Tonight, Hard Times, and I Shot The Sheriff, but he was also part of Cream, and the band’s catalogue includes White Room, Sunshine of Your Love, Crossroads and Strange Brew.

Some or all of these will be performed when Voodoo Room take over South Street on Friday, May 9.

The gig, which starts at 8pm, will be two hours of some of the very best tracks evoking the popular musicians.

Voodoo Room promise there will be no wigs, no gimmicks … just great music from great musicians, all aiming to show the true spirit of the legendary superstars.

The band have been together for 13 years and have recorded and toured with Stevie Winwood, Massive Attack, Arthur Brown, Fish, Thunder, and other high-profile artists.

Voodoo Room features guitarist Peter Orr, who has three decades of experience mashing up classic riff-based rock anthems, with the energy and style evocative of their time, while delivering jaw-dropping solos.

The three piece is completed by the stunning rhythm section of Jevon Beaumont and John Tonks.

Away from Voodoo Room, they have worked with Massive Attack, Duran Duran, Sting, Thunder, Bryan Adams, Fish, Stevie Winwood, Arthur Brown, as well as Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce.

John says of the music that Voodoo Room will be performing at South Street on Friday: “It has endured because it is so original and ground breaking in many regards but still maintaining a foundation in the early rhythm and blues.

“The playing of each member and contributor in each line-up is incredible and a challenge to reproduce but is so satisfying to play.

“We never tire of performing this material.”

And the band cannot wait to return to South Street, as John explains: “It has been a long while since we played there last.

“We play sell out shows nearby in Maidenhead and Newbury and there’s always members of the audience who have travelled from Reading who have then asked us to perform in their home town.

“Hopefully they’ll come on Friday.”
