Lovesong sees Reading’s Progress Theatre explore the power of love

A play exploring themes of love, memory and time is coming to Reading’s Progress Theatre this month and tickets are now on sale.

The volunteer-run theatre produces a range of plays in different genres across the year, and Lovesong, by Abi Morgan, is its latest.

What is Lovesong about?

Lovesong is the story of a couple, told from two different points in their lives.

We meet them as young lovers full of hope and as worldly companions looking back on their relationship.

Their past and present selves collide in this haunting and beautiful tale of togetherness.

All relationships have their ups and downs; the optimism of youth becomes the wisdom of experience.

Love is a leap of faith – this is an opportunity to enjoy an intimate look at the realities of a relationship, warts and all.

The play is directed by Steph Dewar.

When will Lovesong be performed at Progress Theatre and how can tickets be bought?

Lovesong will be performed at Progress Theatre from Friday, March 21, through to Saturday, March 29.

The theatre, in The Mount, off Christchurch Green, opens its doors at 7.15pm, with the performance starting at 7.45pm.

Tickets cost £15, or £12 for concessions.

What else is coming up from Progress Theatre?

Between May 2 and 10, the Progress Theatre team will present The Cripple of Inishmaan.

Set in a claustrophobic island community, crippled orphan Billy Claven dreams of an escape.

When a Hollywood film crew arrives on a nearby island to film Man of Aran, Billy sees his chance… if only Babbybobby will row ‘im across…

And from June 12-21, the team present Parade.

This is based on the true story of Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jewish man living in Georgia. He is put on trial for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker in his employ.

A moral lesson on the dangers of prejudice and ignorance.

More about Progress Theatre

Established in 1946, Progress Theatre is the oldest producing theatre in Reading and will next year celebrate its 80^th anniversary.

Its patron is Sir Kenneth Branagh and is a self-funded group run by volunteers, we strive to present challenging theatre productions, with a focus on new writing, for the local community.

The theatre has 96 seats, and a fully licencsed bar.

There is wheelchair access and a hearing loop, and the team has recently completed work on new unisex and accessible toilets.
