Great news for Reading FC fans: club legends to team up for an evening to remember

Mikele Leigertwood and Nigel Gibbs to reflect on their careers in event hosted by fellow Royals legend Ady Williams

The Reading FC Former Players Association is organising a special event to delight fans of the football club with two legends opening up about their life and careers.

Mikele Leigertwood and Nigel Gibbs need little introduction to fans.

Currently first team coach and assistant manager respectively, their association with the club includes some of the Royals’ most successful periods.

Nigel was initially appointed alongside Brian McDermott with the reserves side, winning that league’s title before the duo took over managing the first team in 2010.

In that season they reached the Championship play-off final where they were beaten by Swansea.

The following season, they scooped the Championship title and won 17 of 23 games in the second half of their season. The prize was seeing the team return to the Premiership for the second time.

Top goal scorer that season was Adam Le Fondre, with 12 balls in the back of the net.

Among that Championship winning side was Mikele, joining the team in June 2011 from QPR after a successful loan spell.

He went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club, netting 10 goals, before hanging up his boots in 2014.

Two years later, he joined Reading FC’s coaching staff, becoming Under 18s manager in the 2019/20 season.

Today, he is Reading FC’s first team coach, and works with Nigel who returned to the club when Noel Hunt became the new gaffer following the departure of Rubén Sellés, who left to manage Hull in December.

Ady Williams has a long history with Reading FC, playing in the team between 1989 and 1996, and again from 2000-2004.

He is now part of BBC Radio Berkshire’s sports team, and a familiar voice on matchdays.

When and where is the Reading FC Former Players Association night taking place and how can I get tickets?

The Evening with Mikele Leigertwood and Nigel Gibbs organised by the Reading FC Former Players Association is to be held on Thursday, January 2025.

The doors and bars open at 6.30pm, with the event starting at 7.30pm.
