Copper turned comedian Alfie Moore says he can’t wait to come to Reading, thanks to his love for some of our famous three Bs.

The star of BBC Radio 4’s comedy series It’s A Fair Cop is bringing his latest stand-up show to Reading Town Hall later this month.

Alfie Moore’s A Face For Radio is an exploration of aging, policing, and sleeping.

Having reached the wrong side of 50, with more than 20 years of shift-work and being frequently punched leaving Alfie Moore with ‘a face for radio’, a massive opportunity came knocking to transition Alfie from radio to  TV star.

Could he grab it or had Father Time decided that his time had passed?

In A Face For Radio, audiences can expect Alfie Moore’s hilarious police stories from his time on the frontline, including those accompanied by his best-ever policing partner – his German shepherd dog Zeus.

There will be some thought-provoking views on topical policing issues, as well as exploring his feelings about family and getting older.

A true story about aging and ageism that’s both personal and packed with punchlines. All delivered in his irrepressible, interactive style.

Alfie Moore promises a true story about aging and ageism that’s both personal and packed with punchlines. All delivered in his irrepressible, interactive style.

As for coming to the Ding, Alfie Moore says the date will be lucky for some … it’s on Friday, June 13.

“I’m very excited for my return visit to Reading,” says Alfie.

“I know the town is famous for its ‘Three Bs’  industries: beer, bulbs and biscuits – and for me two out of three ain’t bad.”

Who is Alfie Moore?

Described as “offbeat, revealing and very funny” by the Daily Mail, Alfie Moore is now a comedian famous for his Radio 4 appearances.

At the age of 16 he left school with no qualifications except his reputation of ‘class clown’ and took an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks.

When a recession hit, he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police.

He recently retired after more than 20 years’ service with the force, where roles included front-line Response, Drugs Squad, Public Protection Team, Tutor Unit, Neighbourhood Sergeant, and a Detective Sergeant specialising in Domestic Violence and Vulnerable Adults.

Alfie uses comedy as a powerful voice to raise awareness of topical policing issues. And his BBC Radio 4 show It’s A Fair Cop is something he writes and performs himself.

It’s been running for several years now, and the ninth series has just started.

How can I get tickets to see Alfie Moore’s show in Reading Town Hall?

Somewhere in a parallel universe, little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents, who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent.

After several years as a stage school brat, Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen, and the rest is history.

Meanwhile, in this universe, Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When recession hit, he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police.

Thirty years of shift-work, initially in the Sheffield steelworks and then as a copper on the beat (where he was punched in the face quite a lot), has left him with ‘a face for radio’.  A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair.

In his 40s a surprising career shift turned middle-aged Alfie from street cop to BBC radio star. But when TV fame beckoned could he grasp it or was he past it?

A Face For Radio is coming to Reading Town Hall on Friday, May 13. Tickets cost £23.50, and are available from the Reading Arts box office by calling 0118 960 6060, or logging on to: https://whatsonreading.com/venues/town-hall/whats-on/alfie-moore-face-radio
