The clue is in the name: Free Comic Book Day returns to Reading’s Crunch Comics on Saturday, and new readers can start here.

The annual event is a worldwide celebration of the graphic art medium that has enthralled generations. Comic shops across the globe will be giving away freebies to anyone who comes over the door.

Organisers say that Free Comic Book Day is based on the premise that there is a comic out there for everyone, whether a lifelong fan or someone looking to start their reading adventure. The comics cover a range of ages, so there is something for everyone.

In past years, major publishers like Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite, Image, and many amazing indie creators have delivered a diverse lineup of free comics. From superheroes to hit TV shows, video games, and all-ages adventures, there’s something for everyone. Past favourites have included Pokémon, Doctor Who, SpongeBob, TMNT, Overwatch, and Star Wars.

Free Comic Book Day

Crunch Comics, based in Harris Arcade off Friar Street, is looking forward to the event and, to meet demand, will open its doors from 9am. In previous years, comic fans have been queuing outside the doors to get their hands on the comics.

This year, there is a wide selection of titles to choose from, with the exact titles being kept under wraps until the big day. There could be DC superheroes teaming up with Sonic Hedgehog, a preview of the new hero Aquamanatee, a Flash Gordon revival, or Manga titles.

Every customer can choose up to three special edition comics when visiting, and no purchase is necessary. However, it is first-come, first-served, and some titles will be snapped up quickly.

There’s more: Crunch Comics will have special offers all day on back issues, complete comic sets, manga and graphic novels.

Crunch Comics is one of a number of independent businesses in Harris Arcade, which has recently been given a makeover. It offers a range of services for readers, including the ability to set up ‘pull lists’: reserving copies of comics from publishers including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Titan. It also stocks graphic novels, books, and other comic-related memorabilia, as well as Pokémon cards.

Next year, it will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
