The Choir of Royal Holloway will perform a wide-ranging choral programme at Reading Town Hall in January as part of the Classical Music Alive 2025–26 season.
Titled From Darkness to Light, the concert takes place on Thursday, 22 January, and is conducted by Rupert Gough, with Daniel Ayers on organ.
The programme traces themes of night, reflection and illumination through sacred and secular choral works spanning several centuries.
Music includes Miškinis’ Dum medium silentium, Tallis’ O nata lux, Purcell’s Hear My Prayer and Rheinberger’s Abendlied, alongside more recent works by Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo and Tarney. The programme also features Parry’s Early One Morning, Finzi’s My Spirit Sang All Day and Bob Chilcott’s arrangement of You Are The New Day.

The Choir of Royal Holloway is regarded as one of the leading mixed-voice collegiate choirs in the UK.
Founded in 1886, at the same time as Royal Holloway, the ensemble was originally formed for women’s voices before later becoming a mixed choir.
Today it comprises 24 Choral Scholars and maintains a busy schedule of weekly services, concerts, recordings and broadcasts.
The choir gives around 40 to 50 concerts each year and is particularly noted for its commitment to contemporary music.
It is also the only choir to present a weekly concert performance, alongside international touring and regular appearances on radio and television.
Classic FM has previously described the ensemble as having “attained standards of musicianship and technical refinement high above the reach of most student ensembles”.
A free pre-concert talk will take place at 6.30pm in the Town Hall ahead of the performance.
