Congo by Doris Allimadi
Saturday, November 8 at 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Congo, a play by Doris Allimadi, tells the story of Fifi, a young Congolese woman who is brutally sexually assaulted by two soldiers in her home while her husband, Obi, is at work.
As a result of the attack, Fifi suffers from PTSD, experiencing anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks.
She turns to alcohol to cope with the trauma.
The play also touches upon Obi’s self-blame for not being able to protect his wife, raising the question of what he could have done against armed soldiers.
The play is not only a powerful look at the suffering of Congolese girls and women caught in conflict, but also a showcase of the country’s rich culture, mineral wealth, food, fashion, music, and dance.
The performance is described as “Powerful. Gripping. Unmissable.”
