A touch of Philadelphia soul mingled with some R’n’B came to Reading’s Hexagon, thanks to The Stylistics.
On a cold November evening, the band warmed the audience as they celebrated more than five decades of unforgettable melodies, all executed with absolute finesse and class.
Supporting act Tom Cridland opened the evening with his Elton John tribute project, Rocket Man.
Sporting rainbow-sequined shoes and a blue suit emblazoned with musical clefs and stars, he delivered a set full of heartfelt performances including Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me and Candle in the Wind.
He quickly found his stride, delighting the crowd with anecdotes about Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s songwriting.
Tom also shared some of his personal stories, adding depth to his performance.
He closed his short set with a lively take on Bennie and the Jets, to an appreciative audience.
When The Stylistics took the stage, it was clear that the audience’s excitement had stepped up a gear.
Without an elaborate intro, they launched straight into their first number, That’s What Makes the World Go Round.
The trio’s harmonies remained razor-sharp, and the band was tight and superb in supporting these Philadelphia legends. Highlights included Betcha By Golly Wow, which inspired a heartfelt singalong, and Let’s Put It All Together, with the group strutting across the stage in synchronised dance routines.
Their embellished dark suits sparkled beautifully under the purple lights.
Original founding member Airrion Love charmed the audience with personal stories, reflecting on the group’s 56 years in music and the international reach of their songs, from the UK to Japan and the Philippines.
Stylistics member Jason Sharp, who has provided the group’s falsetto vocals since 2011, delivered incredible performances that matched the quality of the original recordings.
His voice was particularly powerful during You Make Me Feel Brand New, a crowd favourite that brought the house to its feet.
Closing with the infectious Rockin’ Roll Baby, The Stylistics ensured the night ended on a high. Their encore – Can’t Give You Anything (But My Love) –had everyone on their feet, a reminder of why their music remains timeless.
This concert wasn’t just a performance; it was a celebration of music’s enduring power to connect and inspire.
The Stylistics didn’t just revisit their legacy – they reaffirmed it.
For longtime fans, it was a cherished memory revisited; for newer listeners like me, it was an unforgettable introduction to their brilliance.
The Stylistics proved they’re not just timeless – they’re vital.
The Stylistics visited Reading’s Hexagon Theatre on Wednesday, November 13.
