The Amazons rock the SCL … days ahead of 21st Century Fiction album launch

Reading super band to return next week for HMV gig ... ahead of headlining at Readipop Fiesta

The Amazons helped Reading FC fans celebrate news that the club had been sold, thanks to a set on the Purple Turtle Stage at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday.

The band made a guest appearance days before the launch of their fourth album, 21st Century Fiction.

Due for release on Friday, May 9, the band say it marks the emergence of their bold new sound. There are plenty of riffs that The Amazons’ fans expect, but there is also a new level of introspection, energy and grandiose.

The Amazons are hoping that they will become the first Reading band to have an album go to number one.

Where did The Amazons perform?

The Purple Turtle Stage is outside the Sir John Madejski Stand at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

It offers Royals fans an opportunity to get together before the game, and enjoy some music and good food before going into the stadium to watch the game.

Saturday’s match against Barnsley was a must-win fixture if the club was to make the play-offs, so understandably the SCL was sold out. Unfortunately, the match ended in defeat and Leyton Orient won their game so the Royals will be in League One again next season.

While fans will be disappointed that the season is now over, they won’t have been upset at catching The Amazons set, which was a condensed version of their live show.

After their set, they went pitch side.

Where else can I see The Amazons?

The Amazons are about to go on tour to celebrate the launch of 21st Century Fiction – and their plans involve Reading … twice.

They will promote the album with a tour including HMV stores, including a visit to Reading at 5pm on Thursday, May 15. They will also visit HMV Manchester on Friday, May 9, HMV Birmingham on Monday, May 12.

Readipop is slightly different this year as it’s not the big event in Caversham. Instead, it will be at the University of Reading’s Students Union. Taking place on Saturday, September 13, The Amazons are headlining a bill that includes Stealing Sheep, Roni Size, Puma Theory, Rose Rey, Vanity Fairy and Jopy.

More music from The Purple Turtle

The Purple Turtle is a Reading institution and for years it had the mantra ‘what happens at the Turtle stays at the Turtle’ but with the new Royals Fanzone, well, it’s branched out.
