David Olusoga, well known for his work on A House Through Time and Black and British: A Forgotten History, has announced 2026 dates for his A Gun Through Time tour.
Following a busy year that included an appearance on Celebrity Traitors and an interview with former US president Barack Obama, David will visit both Guildford and Basingstoke this April.
The show takes the audience on a journey through the social histories of weapons that shaped empires and wars. Rather than focusing on technical specifications or battle tactics, David examines the lives of the ordinary people for whom these objects became an integral part of their existence.
Four legendary firearms
David will bring four historic firearms onto the stage to illustrate how they changed the course of history. These include the Thompson Sub-Machine Gun, famously known as the Tommy Gun, and the Maxim Gun, which was used in the conquest of African territories and remains in use on modern battlefields today.
The show also features the Lee-Enfield Rifle, a staple for British soldiers during both World Wars, and the Brown Bess flintlock musket. The latter was used by British troops at Waterloo and by American rebels during the fight for independence.
David explained his interest in the subject, noting that most people today have little contact with firearms compared to previous generations.
He said: “Today, most of us have never even seen a gun, thanks to strict gun laws and a smaller military. This show explores how guns were once integral to life, shaping our history and culture. Yet, as conflicts re-emerge, the peace we have known feels fragile.”
When is David Olusoga coming to Guildford, and how can I get tickets?
David Olusoga will perform at G Live in Guildford on Monday, 27 April 2026, followed by a show at The Anvil in Basingstoke on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
