More than 200 musicians from across the borough will perform at The Hexagon this Saturday, 9 May, for the world premiere of a unique new concert.
Reading Sound Foundry brings together the University of Reading, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and a wide range of local community performers.
The event marks a major milestone in the University’s Centenary programme.
The centrepiece of the afternoon is the debut of Reading Illuminations, a new orchestral work composed by Raph Clarkson.
The piece was created through a collaborative process involving intensive workshops where amateur and professional musicians helped shape the final score.
A notable feature of the composition includes a section created in real-time by composer John Webb during rehearsals, ensuring the performance is a unique reflection of the participants involved.
The work draws inspiration from Gustav Holst, who taught at the University during the 1920s, but also incorporates modern influences and global instruments including the koto, djembe, and bouzouki.
Dan Miller, Head of Music at the University of Reading, was looking forward to sharing the work with the town: “This project has brought together people from across the town to create something that could only exist here, at this moment. It honours the University’s musical heritage while looking firmly forward.”
The concert will also feature sets from the University Choir, Big Band, Gospel Choir, and the world music ensemble Limpopo Groove.
Community musician Ritesh Nigam said: “Being part of a piece created and performed by this many people from Reading has been an extraordinary experience.”
Due to the size of the ensemble and the one-off nature of the performance, organisers are advising the public to book tickets in advance.
