Saxophonist Simon Bates is to perform a selection of soulful melodies when he appears at Pangbourne Jazz Club this weekend.
The organisers say he has become a huge favourite at the venue, and they are looking forward to welcoming him back.
Simon Bates is described as a captivating saxophonist whose electrifying performances have left audiences enchanted worldwide.
With his virtuosity and passion for music, Simon is said to effortlessly weave together elements of jazz, funk, and contemporary styles, creating a unique and exhilarating sound, while his mastery of the saxophone is matched only by his ability to connect with listeners on a deeply emotional level, taking them on a musical journey they won’t soon forget.
Whether performing on stage or recording in the studio, Simon Bates aims to push the boundaries of his craft.
He can perform pop, rock, jazz, funk, West End musical numbers, and classical music. He has also been appointed the Professor of Saxophone by the Royal Marines and the British Army bands.
His performances can be heard in advertisements, film scores, television and radio shows, theme tunes, and popular recordings, and he has regularly collaborated with a multitude of notable musical stars spanning various genres. They include Jamie Cullum, Kylie Minogue, Elvis Costello, Dizzee Rascal, Van Morrison, David Benoit, Lulu, Chaka Khan, Seal, Alfie Boe, John Dankworth and Cleo Laine.
Additionally, Simon has served as the musical director for vocalists such as Rick Astley, Alexander Armstrong, and Bette Midler, and conducted performances with the BBC Singers and the Orchestra of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
It all started for him as a youngster: but not on the saxophone. His first instrument, while at junior school, was the violin. Entranced by his dad’s clarinet, he made a switch and achieved Grade 8 standard when he was 12. Two years later, he switched again to the saxophone and enjoyed his first paid performance.
While studying a classical music degree, he immersed himself in jazz, spending his days studying Stravinsky and his nights captivating audiences with the sounds of Charlie Parker in London’s vibrant clubs.
For the gig at Pangbourne Jazz Club, he will be performing with The Terry Hutchins Quartet: Terry on guitar, Stuart Barker on double bass, Brian Greene on drums, and JP on piano.
In addition to the music, there is a bar, and a free raffle. A car park is available.
