Chris McCausland won hearts, minds and the public vote to be crowned winner of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing contest along with his dancing partner, Dianne Buswell.
On Saturday, December 14, millions tuned into BBC One to watch the pair pick up the Glitterball trophy, something that he didn’t expect when he signed up to the show.
Over the autumn, the novice dancer realised he didn’t have two left feet but was actually pretty nimble and, with the expert guidance from Dianne, learnt how to waltz, do the Charleston, and an American Smooth and numerous other ballroom staples.
The achievement is even more pronounced when taking into account his sight loss.
The comedian, whose wisecracks and self-depreciating comedy had audiences in stitches, gradually lost his sight to retinitis pigmentosa in his 20s and 30s. Now 47, he triumphed over 15 other celebrities including DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles and 80s pop star Toyah.

After the win, Chris praised Dianne and said their strong friendship meant she was stuck with him for life … unless she changed her phone number.
But Chris didn’t expect to reach the final of Strictly Come Dancing, let alone win it, and had a tour booked for the autumn which included a date in Reading.
Instead, Yonks has been rearranged for the spring and with him now being in high demand, additional dates have been added.
Yonks! Is the new show from Chris McCausland
Chris McCausland is hitting the road again with another masterclass in stand-up comedy that has literally been yonks in the making.
He’s been called an “overnight success” – Even though he’s been doing this for bloody yonks.
The show is touring through to 2026, with just one Reading date.
Chortle comedy guide has given the show four stars in its review, praising him for showing that “being mainstream doesn’t have to be bland”.
As well as appearing on Strictly, Chris has been a regular on television shows including Would I Lie to You, Have I Got News for You, The Royal Variety, QI, Blankety Blank, and The Last Leg.
For some, they will always remember him for his role of Rudi the market trader in the CBeebies show Me Too.
He operated a fruit and veg stall on the Riverseafingal Market, and had his own song, The Market. It asked children which way he should go to get to his stall.
When is Chris McCausland coming to Reading’s Hexagon?
Chris McCausland is going to be appearing at The Hexagon on Saturday, April 5.
Suitable for ages 16 upwards, there are three shows.
Originally, it was just 4pm and 8pm, and these performances have sold out.
An additional time of 1pm has been added to the date, and tickets for this are now on sale.
They cost £33.50 each, and demand is high as Chris mania sweeps Britain.
They can be ordered by calling the box office on 0118 960 6060, or logging on to https://whatsonreading.com/venues/hexagon/whats-on/chris-mccausland-yonks
